Certification in Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapy (Restricted)

This course is restricted to students who have already signed up for any of the Manual Therapy courses.

Course Overview:
The COMT program is for clinicians who wish to significantly enhance their manual therapy skills for soft tissue work, joint mobilization, and joint manipulation, along with evidence-based critical decision making to improve their clinical practice. Learn how manual therapy hands-on interventions will reduce patient symptoms and impairments getting your patients moving fast. The uniqueness of the Ola Grimsby Institute’s Certification in Orthopedic Manual Therapy (COMT) program lies in the combination of the advanced, hands-on training, and the dedication of our instructors to your success and the health of your patients. Courses are a 60/40 lab versus lecture format. The MT1 course is more heavily weighted as a lecture for fundamental sciences in manual therapy and will be presented as a home study course. Certification Requirements Complete all 6 courses, including online quizzes following the courses, along with a review and examination weekend. Courses can be taken in any order and completed over a 3 year period. In-class hours 96, out of class study/practice 214 hours, testing weekend hours 12 hours. MT1: Clinical & Scientific Rationale For Modern Manual Therapy (Home study program recommended to be completed as early as possible) all on one line if possible MT2: Manual Therapy of the Cervical Spine and Upper Extremity (Taught by Alec Kay on Dec. 4-5) MT3: Manual Therapy of the Lumbar Spine, Pelvis, and Lower Extremity (Taught by Jim Rivard on Jan. 22-23) MT6: Introduction to Spinal Manipulation MT7: Advanced Soft Tissue (Taught by Joel Anderson on Sept. 25-26) MT8: Manipulation of the Extremities Seventh weekend: Review, written exam and Practical Exam Weekend

Signing up to each course separately will cost you $3.319 (MT 2, 3, 6, 7, and 8: $499 per weekend course. Exam weekend: $499. MT1 Home Study $325.) If you sign up for the entire program you will get the MT1 for a low $99, for a total of $3.093.

Joel Anderson graduated from the University of North Dakota in 1997 with his Master of Physical Therapy degree. In 2003, he graduated from the Ola Grimsby Institute with a Doctor of Physical Therapy as well as a Master of Orthopedic Manual Therapy degree. In 2013, he earned his Ph.D. in Orthopedic Manual Therapy and is currently an instructor and clinical mentor for the Ola Grimsby Institute. He has been a practicing therapist since 1997 and has been Therapy Director for Cascade Rehabilitation since 2007. He is passionate about improving patients’ overall health through increased strength and stability, improved stress management, and a better diet. His orthopedic clinical practice emphasizes restoring myofascial mobility in all patient types with an emphasis on headaches and spinal pain.  Dr. Anderson has also been an invited speaker at the OGI competency Forum, PTWA practice panel, University of Washington, University of North Dakota, Everett Community College, and the Ashmead Massage school. He serves in an advisory position with several high schools’ sports medicine programs and provides industrial consultation for on-site orthopedic and repetitive stress injuries.

Dr. Jim Rivard practices physical therapy in Seattle, Washington. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Therapy from the University of Puget Sound in 1988.  After completing a two-year Part I residency program with the Ola Grimsby Institute, he received a Masters in Orthopaedic Manual Therapy through the state of California.  In 1993 he completed a two-year Part II program with the OGI. His teaching experience has included residencies in San Diego, Dallas, Anchorage, and Spokane, as well as short-term courses in Manual Therapy of the Spine, Extremities, and S.T.E.P. (Scientific Therapeutic Exercise Progressions). Dr. Rivard has received invitations to speak at national conferences and state chapter meetings in Washington, Alaska, and Florida, and has also been invited to speak in Norway, Canada, Belgium, Finland, and Brazil. He is one of the Vice Presidents of the O.G.I.  Responsible for Program Content and Development.

Jim Rivard is the founder, co-owner, and President of MTI Physical Therapy. Four years of post-graduate training specializing in orthopedic manual therapy has made him an expert in a wide range of orthopedic issues: sports rehabilitation, post-surgical rehabilitation, spinal injury, headache, TMJ disorders, work injury, and motor vehicle collision. His passion for learning and the development of clinical skills culminated in the establishment of MTI Physical Therapy as a teaching clinic for post-graduate training. His clinical achievements have been recognized with the attainment of Fellow in the AAMOPT in 1995 and a Board Certified Orthopaedic Clinical Specialist in 1997. He has been honored to serve over 9 years on the Executive Board of the American Academy of Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapy, as well as serving as AAOMPT President from 2014 to 2017.

Alec Kay

Alec has been practicing physical therapy for over 25 years and currently works full time in a clinical practice at United Physical Therapy in Anchorage, Alaska. He is the current president of that organization. Working as an athletic trainer prior to PT school, he continues to enjoy working with athletes as his interest in sports rehabilitation continues to evolve. His post-graduate studies included completion of a Master of Orthopedic Manual Therapy in 1997 and a Doctor of Manual Therapy degree in 2000, with a dissertation on the lumbar multifidus, leading to multiple publications. After completion of his DMT, Alec was appointed to the faculty of the Ola Grimsby Institute Post-Professional Consortium and is currently teaching advanced techniques in manual orthopedic physical therapy locally and in other states, as well as presenting as an invited speaker both nationally and internationally. In addition to teaching, Alec shares his expertise working as a clinical mentor for residency, fellowship students in both manual therapy and Family Practice Medicine.
